Theatrics
Back in 2017, a actress friend invited me to watch the Grupão Grotowski at the Instituto do Ator. At the very first day I became fascinated by the space and specially for Jerzy Grotowski. It was the first time in my life that I identified at a moment’s notice with an idea. It was as if I finally discovered my “tribe”. All, absolutely all of what I believe to be the social role of Art was verbalized by Celina Sodré quoting Jerzy Grotowski. The amusement and passion for this big director turned up intense. I sank down profoundly in all that I could found about him. I bought books, downloaded PDFs, entered bookstores and went directly to the theater arts section. Didn’t lose Grupão at Thursdays.
In all of this experience, I had some reflections about musical performance and realized how much drama and arts can be complementary. Mainly: how much a musical performance can be enriched with theatrics elements.
The fascination and passion for this great director had been intense, I had immersed myself deeply in everything that was within my reach about him, buying books, downloading PDFs, entering a bookstore and going straight to the Performing Arts section, never missing a “Grupão Thursday”,…
In this whole experience, I had been through some reflections on musical performance, and I realized how complementary theater, and the arts, can be. Mainly, how much a musical performance can be enriched with elements from the theater.
And the moment came when I realized I needed to get out of theory and into practice, for almost two years of intense reading and going to the Grupão had passed already. It was time to act. That was, when off-the-cuff, I approached the director of Instituto do Ator, Celina Sodré, at the end of a Grupão session, and commented that I had some ideas for mixing musical performances with theatrical ones. She invited me to take part in the group of actors’ rehearsals on Fridays. It was pure joy!
Since then, I’ve participated in Friday’s group, focused on the Russian theme, and based on works by Dostoevsky and Tarkovsky, with the play Noite das Russas (“Night of The Russians”). Also, on Wednesdays, I’m in Bar Planetário Bergman (“Bergman’s Planetary Bar”), a play that’s been on for over a year now at Instituto do Ator.
